Current Activities

At present NICATS is involved with three major projects:

The UK Credit Equivalence Project (UKCEP)

The UK Credit Equivalence Project is a partnership involving NICATS, the Credit and Qualifications Framework, Wales (CQFW), the Learning and Skills Development Agency ((LSDA), and others to carry out work to establish credit equivalences for a range of national qualifications. These will include GCE AS/A Level, GCSE, GNVQ, NVQ and other vocational qualifications.

The FE Sector /NICATS Access Curriculum Development Project

Access to HE programmes are aimed at mature students with few, if any, formal qualifications. Often referred to as 'Foundation courses', the Access to HE programmes generally include a foundation core of communication, IT and numeracy together with a range of optional modules. They are, as the name suggests, recognised as preparing mature students for entry to higher education courses at university or elsewhere.

The principles and guidelines recommended by NICATS are being used to develop new modules in communication, IT and mathematics for use in the Access to HE courses which are offered throughout Northern Ireland.

The first phase of the project (Feb - June 2001) will focus on the writing of mathematics modules.

The Credit-based Funding Project

In preparation for the Implementation of NICATS by September 2002, The Department for Employment and Learning has recently asked NICATS (February 2001) to commission research and frame recommendations on the funding implications of a unitised curriculum for both the further and higher education sectors.
